On Mac:

Sharing -> services -> Personal File Sharing (enable)

On Linux:

sudo /etc/samba/smb.conf — Edit <writable = yes> all the way at the bottom

sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

This got a dropbox working, wherein both ends can write and copy data. If this doesnt work, there might have been one other variable that contributed, but this should do the trick. It solved my inability to retrieve server data error.

For me, I installed samba in linux, then mounted the linux box on my mac with “Go > Connect to server…” I must have had to tell linux what to offer for sharing and the permissions to grant, but that was a while ago….
